Skills in Language Interpretation Among City Staff

Surrey's population is richly diverse. Seventy-three languages are spoken by residents, as either their mother tongue or the language spoken most often at home. A considerable number of residents also have no or limited knowledge of English. Cultural awareness and interpretive language skills among City staff are critical to ensuring that residents have access to information and public services. The percentage of City staff involved in the interpretive language inventory is a measure of corporate cultural awareness, and the City aims to see the level of staff involvement increase over time.
